about

'The Paul Edis Sextet is a unique ensemble; a band of musicians whose enthusiasms include steam trains, venison burgers, tattoos, and singing bowls, and who share the line that begins with Jelly Roll Morton, and passes through the Ellington small groups, John Kirby, Charles Mingus, and Dave Douglas.

They present intricate small group jazz that is gloriously free of hackneyed procedures and that glitters with unexpected details. Listen carefully, and you will hear Schoenberg stalking George Russell, and find that Mr Hipster is a close relative of the Pink Panther.

In Knight Errant, for instance, you will hear a black-tie piano introduction roll out a Moorish grid on which trumpet struts, then duets with the leaders keyboard until the piano (Concert Granados) leads up back to the theme which is capped by an astonishing Spaghetti Western coda.

Consider the beauties found in Lost in Translation....an opening road-map, a vein of pure Silver, and a central interlude of Baritone saxophone underpinned by handclaps on the backbeat. And don't pretend you expected THAT!

Finally Vignette, a delicate and melancholy waltz that might have been written by Poulenc, depicting an elegant trumpet meeting a yearning tenor on some twilit boulevard to philosophise over Absinthe'
